READING, MA. – September 2025 – Old South United Methodist Church is delighted to announce that Luciana Oliveira has joined the staff as Youth Ministries Coordinator, beginning this September. In this role, Luciana will lead Sunday School curriculum and children’s education during the service from 10 to 11 am each Sunday. She will also help drive ongoing community engagement with children of all ages, through a variety of activities – from Advent crafts to youth group gatherings and musical celebrations.

Luciana brings a unique blend of academic training and hands-on experience to the position. She is currently pursuing her Master of Divinity at Boston University School of Theology and already holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Originally from Brazil, Luciana has over 16 years of experience teaching and mentoring children. She is passionate about education, pastoral care, and cross-cultural ministry.

“We are thrilled to welcome Luciana to Old South,” said Rev. JongWook Hong, pastor of Old South United Methodist Church. “Her dedication, experience, and understanding of what young people need to thrive make her a wonderful fit for our congregation. We are excited for the many ways she will bless and inspire our children and families.”

Luciana is equally enthusiastic about her new role. “I am grateful for the opportunity God has given me to serve and learn within the Old South community,” she shared. “I look forward to welcoming children and families into meaningful experiences of faith, fellowship, and joy.”

The congregation will officially welcome Luciana on September 7, 2025, during a service that will include a Blessing of the Backpacks for students of all ages and the collection of lunchbox snacks to be donated to our partner in ministry, the Reading Food Pantry.

Throughout the year, we encourage families to visit for a service, to meet Lucinda, learn more about upcoming youth programs and “test drive” Sunday School. All children are welcome to join Sunday School, regardless of membership at the church. We believe that no matter where you are on your faith journey, no matter your age, race, gender, orientation, or ethnicity, no matter your religious or political affiliation, no matter your financial or social status, you are a child of God and all are welcome.
