The Reading School Committee officially approved Monday, June 22nd as the last day of school for the 2025–2026 academic year during its April 16th meeting. The change extends the school year by several days from its originally scheduled end date due to the district’s use of four snow days this winter. State law requires public schools to complete 180 instructional days, leaving the committee with limited flexibility when revising the calendar.
Under the approved plan, students will attend a shortened day of approximately two and a half hours following the Juneteenth holiday weekend. Committee members acknowledged concerns that attendance could be lower given the timing. Superintendent Dr. Milaschewski explained that other options, including Saturday classes or adding time to the school day, were reviewed but determined to be more disruptive for families and staff.
After brief discussion, a motion was made and seconded to formally approve June 22nd as the final day of school. The proposal passed unanimously by roll call vote, with all committee members voting in favor. Members cited the importance of providing clarity and certainty as the school year approaches its conclusion.
Dr. Milaschewski noted that while the calendar adjustment is not ideal, it ensures compliance with state requirements and allows families and staff to finalize summer plans. The updated school calendar will be shared with the community through official district communications.
