As of February 25, 2025 the second water meter process has been made available to all residential properties in Town. Second meter installations will be limited to 500 permits per fiscal year and shall be scheduled by the Department of Public Works as scheduling allows. Public Works anticipate being able to install up to 20 secondary water meters per week. Your licensed plumber may initiate the Plumbing permit via the Town’s website at: https://readingma.portal.opengov.com/categories/1083/record-types/6617
Owners will not pay sewer charges on the water used through the Secondary Water Meter. The Secondary Water Meter rate shall be determined annually by the Select Board.
- Meter Cost: $400 meter plus transponder (Residential)
- Water Connection (Second Meter) Application Fee: $100.00 (residential)
- Plumbing Permit: $50 (Residential) $50 for Backflow Prevention Device (if needed)
- Tamper Fee: $300 – Tampering includes but is not limited to customers that received unauthorized, unmetered water, customers that have intentional damage or tampering done to their meters, meter locks, radio readers, wires, or any equipment that is property of the Town.
