Free Installation of Compliant Detectors for 10 Local Senior Households in Partnership with Reading Fire Department
To learn more, please see the announcement video linked below. Bobbie Botticelli, co-owner of Colonial Manor Realty in Reading, Massachusetts, has launched a community initiative to assist local seniors in meeting Massachusetts’ requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Under state law, effective December 1, 2016, battery-operated smoke detectors in most homes must feature sealed, 10-year, non-replaceable batteries (often photoelectric models with a hush feature). Detectors older than 10 years—or those requiring frequent battery changes—are no longer compliant and must be replaced. Many seniors remain unaware of these rules, and recent fires in the area have underscored the dangers of outdated, disconnected, or malfunctioning devices.
In partnership with her colleague Alicia Botticelli-Tarasuk, Bobbie plans to identify and support 10 senior households facing the greatest need. The program will provide free replacement or installation of fully compliant smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide detectors are mandated on every level of the home (including habitable basements and attics), while smoke detector placement follows local fire department guidelines. The Reading Fire Department will conduct home inspections to determine the exact number, locations, and types of detectors required, and combination smoke/carbon monoxide units may be installed where suitable.
Seniors or their caregivers are encouraged to contact Bobbie with their name, phone number, address, and a brief explanation of their situation to be considered for assistance.
Bobbie also reminded that landlords bear legal responsibility for ensuring rental properties comply with these safety standards and offered to help address any issues if needed.
This spring safety program aims to bring homes up to current code, enhance protection for vulnerable residents, and promote greater fire and carbon monoxide safety throughout the community.
