20,000 sq. ft. remains available at the former Staples location….
The Select Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve an annual all-alcohol package store license for PLM Beverages LLC, doing business as Dion’s Fine Wine and Spirits, at 36 Walkers Brook Drive. The decision followed a public hearing during the January 6th meeting.
Attorney Thomas P. Miller, representing the applicant, introduced Joe Dion, the fourth-generation owner and proposed manager of record. Dion shared the company’s long history, dating back to 1933, and emphasized its commitment to responsible alcohol sales and community engagement.

We look for towns with great communities, and Reading fits that perfectly,” Dion said. “It’s a privilege, not a right, to have a store, and we take that responsibility seriously.”
The new store will occupy approximately 6,000 square feet of the former Staples location in the Walkers Brook Plaza, leaving ~20,000 square feet for another tenant. Plans include retail space, coolers, and a wine-tasting room designed to educate customers. Dion’s currently operates in five other Massachusetts communities.
Board members welcomed the business, noting the importance of compliance with alcohol regulations. “Please make sure we don’t see you again except for annual renewals,” said Co-Chair Chris Haley, underscoring the town’s strict stance on alcohol sales.
Economic Development Planner Kevin McCarthy clarified that Reading is allowed one package store license per 5,000 residents, and this approval brings the town to its current limit of five licenses.
The store aims to open by summer 2026.
There was no mention of who might be occupying the remaining space as the other tenant.
