The Game Changers Media Series begins with a powerful evening dedicated to basketball legend and civil rights icon Bill Russell on Thursday, January 22, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Reading Public Library Community Room.
This inaugural program will examine Russell’s life, legacy, and lasting impact through guided discussion and film, offering attendees an opportunity to engage deeply with the intersections of sports, race, and social justice in the United States. The program is facilitated by community leaders and members of the Ad Hoc Commemoration Establishment (ACE) Committee, in partnership with the Reading Public Library.
Central to the evening’s conversation is Go Up For Glory, Bill Russell’s groundbreaking first memoir, published in 1966. In this candid and influential work, Russell reflects on his journey from segregated Louisiana to NBA greatness, providing insight into leadership, perseverance, and the realities of his era – topics that continue to resonate today.
This January program marks the beginning of a broader Bill Russell-focused series. Future events will include a community viewing and discussion of the documentary Bill Russell: My Life, My Way in March 2026, followed by a shared reading and conversation around Red and Me in May 2026. Copies of Red and Me will be available through the Reading Public Library. Additional programming is planned for Fall 2026, further expanding opportunities for community learning and dialogue.
The Game Changer Media Series is designed to foster thoughtful discussion, reflection, and connection, highlighting individuals whose lives have shaped cultural and civic conversations both on and off the court.
This event is free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend and participate in what promises to be a meaningful kickoff to an ongoing series.
