From Server to Owner: A Familiar Face Takes the Helm at Bangkok Spice

At the Select Board meeting held last month, the Town of Reading officially approved the transfer of an annual wine and malt beverage restaurant license for Bangkok Spice, a beloved Thai restaurant located at 76 Haven Street.

The license, previously held by longtime owner Palarat Pattanesuan, will now be transferred to Bangkok Spice LLC, under the new ownership of Wikanda Oottajak. Oottajak, a familiar face to many patrons, has been a dedicated server at Bangkok Spice for the past 13 years and is now stepping into the role of active manager. She plans to be on-site five or more days a week, ensuring continuity in service and quality.

Representing Oottajak at the meeting was attorney Joe DiBlasi, who shared that the transition comes as Palarat prepares to relocate to Thailand. The change in ownership marks a new chapter for the restaurant, with Oottajak and her business partner, Inthira Khunlertdee, both TIP-certified and experienced in restaurant operations, ready to lead the establishment forward.

Select Board members expressed their support for the transfer, noting the restaurant’s longstanding presence in the community and its contribution to the local dining scene.

You’ve been here a really long time,” said Select Board member Karen Gately-Herrick. “Other restaurants have come and gone, so we look forward to many more years.”

The board unanimously voted to approve the license transfer, ensuring that Bangkok Spice will continue to serve its signature Thai cuisine alongside wine and malt beverages under its new management.

The transition is expected to be completed within the next 30 days.
