Announced in late July, the upgrades included modernized study rooms, expanded community spaces, and improved accessibility features. The project, funded partly by community donations, reaffirmed Reading’s commitment to education and public resources, with a grand reopening planned for the fall that drew widespread excitement.

Fifteen years ago, Reading Youth Soccer marked a significant moment in late July 2010 by announcing plans for its 35th anniversary season. The program, a cornerstone of the town’s youth sports culture, organized a special tournament to celebrate, bringing together teams from across Massachusetts. The event highlighted Reading’s dedication to fostering athleticism and teamwork among its young residents.

🌲 July 2005: Reading Town Forest Restoration Efforts

In 2005, the Reading Conservation Commission launched a restoration project for the Town Forest during the last week of July. Volunteers gathered to clear invasive species and maintain trails, preserving the 260-acre green space for future generations. The initiative underscored the town’s environmental consciousness and its commitment to maintaining natural landmarks.

🎉 July 1995: Reading’s Centennial Parade Plans

Thirty years ago, in July 1995, Reading was abuzz with preparations for its 350th anniversary celebration, with key planning meetings held in late July. The centerpiece was a grand parade scheduled for the following spring, featuring historical reenactments and floats celebrating Reading’s founding in 1644. The event galvanized community pride and drew thousands of residents to honor their shared history.

🏫 July 1985: Reading Memorial High School’s New Wing

In 1985, Reading Memorial High School (RMHS) announced plans for a new academic wing during a school committee meeting in late July. The expansion, aimed at accommodating a growing student population, included state-of-the-art science labs and classrooms. Completed in 1987, the project reflected Reading’s investment in education and its forward-thinking approach to infrastructure.

🚯 July 1970: Reading’s Anti-Litter Campaign

In 1970, the Reading Beautification Committee launched an anti-litter campaign in late July, encouraging residents to keep the town’s streets and parks clean. The initiative included public service announcements and volunteer clean-up days, fostering a sense of civic responsibility. The campaign’s success was evident in the cleaner streets and heightened community engagement that followed.

🎶 July 1960: Reading’s First Summer Concert Series

Sixty-five years ago, in July 1960, Reading hosted its inaugural summer concert series on the Town Common, with the first performance announced for the last week of July. Featuring local bands and orchestras, the series became a beloved tradition, drawing families for evenings of music and community bonding under the stars.

🎖️ July 1945: Reading Honors WWII Veterans

In 1945, as World War II drew to a close, Reading held a special ceremony in late July to honor local veterans returning home. The event, organized by the town’s Veterans’ Committee, included a parade and a community dinner at the Reading Town Hall. The heartfelt tribute highlighted Reading’s gratitude and unity during a pivotal moment in history.

💡 July 1900: Reading’s Electric Streetlights Installed

In 1900, Reading took a leap into the modern era with the installation of electric streetlights, a project finalized in late July. Replacing gas lamps, the new lights illuminated Main Street and improved safety for residents. The upgrade symbolized Reading’s embrace of technological progress and its growth as a bustling suburban town.

⛪ July 1713: Reading’s First Meetinghouse Dispute

Over three centuries ago, in July 1713, Reading faced a community dispute over the location of its first meetinghouse, a critical issue for the town’s Puritan settlers. Discussions held that week, documented in town records, resulted in the decision to build on the Common, shaping Reading’s civic and religious identity for generations.
