READING โ€” Chief David Clark reports that the Reading Police Department and public safety partners have cleared the area of Pierce Street after a large response to a mental health crisis Sunday night.

On Sunday, July 13, Reading Police responded to a call at about 11:13 p.m. regarding an individual experiencing a mental health crisis who had barricaded themselves in their home and was armed.

Reading Police were assisted by the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), which includes specially trained negotiators. Responders successfully placed the individual into protective custody and will connect them with appropriate mental health services.

Responders remained on scene until about 1:45 a.m. on Monday, July 14. There is no active threat to members of the community.

The Reading Police Department would like to thank the community for its patience and cooperation.

No further information is available at this time.
