(READING, MA – July 02, 2025) – Reading Town Manager Matt Kraunelis is pleased to share the Select Board’s recent decisions on water, sewer, and stormwater rates for Fiscal Year 2026. These rates were voted on and finalized following a public hearing and thoughtful deliberation during the Select Board’s June 24 meeting.

Following the recommendation of staff and a consultant, the Select Board voted to hold water rates flat with a 0% increase for FY26. The vote reflects the Select Board’s continued effort to minimize cost impacts to residents while responsibly managing infrastructure investments. To offset rising operational costs, the Town will draw from the Water Reserves Fund, which currently holds 62% of annual expenses—more than double the Town’s required minimum of 30%, and significantly higher than the industry standard of 10–20%, as noted by consultant Matt Abrahams of The Abraham Group.

In a separate motion, the Select Board voted to reduce sewer rates by 1%, supported by robust reserves in the Sewer Fund, currently exceeding 93% of annual expenses. The Board also voted unanimously to maintain the current stormwater fee of $60 per household annually, continuing its support for responsible stormwater management across the community.

These decisions reflect a careful balance between affordability and long-term fiscal health,” said Kraunelis.
“I’m grateful to the Reading Select Board and town staff for their thoughtful work, and I’m proud that Reading continues to make smart, sustainable choices for our residents.”
