2,780+ GIRLS FROM DIVERSE BOSTON COMMUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN GIRLS ON THE RUN SPRING 5K AT BOSTON COMMON ON SATURDAY, MAY 31st
WHO: More than 2,780 girls, ages 8–13, from across the Greater Boston area will lace up their sneakers for the Girls on the Run Greater Boston Spring 5K on Saturday, May 31st. This season’s event marks a milestone as it will be held for the first time ever on Boston Common. Participants represent diverse communities including Boston, Lynn, Lowell, Lawrence, Newton, Marlborough, Saugus, and many more cities and towns in the area. For many girls, this will be the first time they complete a road race of this length. 60% of the girls participating received program scholarships to participate in the Spring Girls on the Run program.
WHAT: The celebratory 5K is the culmination of an 8-week season of Girls on the Run, a nationally recognized, research-based program that integrates running with life skills lessons. Girls build confidence, connection, and a sense of community while learning about emotional, social, and physical well-being. This season, more than 1,600 girls received financial assistance to join the program. Each girl wears a race bib with the number one and is awarded a medal at the finish line.
WHY: The eight-week running season and curriculum helps girls develop the essential skills they need to successfully navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and wellness. Each season’s program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and completing this celebratory 5K event. The Spring 5K offers girls the opportunity to accomplish a tangible goal and celebrate their personal growth and resilience alongside friends, family, and their communities.
WHEN: Saturday, May 31st at 9 a.m. The race starts and ends on Charles Street between Boston Common and the Public Garden. Participants and coaches will begin arriving at 7:30 a.m. for pre-race festivities. The event will be held rain or shine and is expected to end by 10:45 a.m..
