READING — Chief David Clark and Deputy Chief Christine Amendola report that the Reading Police Department responded to the scene of a four-car fatal motor vehicle collision Friday night on Main Street (Route 28).
At 10:06 p.m. Friday, May 2, emergency services received nearly a dozen 911 calls about a collision at the intersection of Main and Hopkins streets.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2006 gray Volvo XC70 was traveling southbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a 2014 green Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound on Hopkins Street, toward the intersection with Main Street.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Volvo allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Main and Hopkins streets and struck the driver’s side door of the Ford.
The Ford then spun into traffic traveling northbound on Main Street, colliding with a 2014 gray Audi Q7. The Volvo collided with a 2018 gray Toyota RAV4 after the initial collision.
The driver of the Volvo was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene by Reading firefighters and paramedics. A passenger from the RAV4 also was injured and taken to a local hospital.
The crash remains under investigation by the Reading Police Department with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision and Accident Reconstruction Section (CARS).

So sad that some local family is waking up without a loved one because someone had to drive recklessly. I see people running red lights all the time on route 28 in Reading. Years ago the cops were really good at giving tickets for anyone going over the speed limit. I think we need to get back to that place.
Traffic laws were put in place for a reason. When people choose to ignore them, driving reckless, only to end some innocent person’s life in an instant is beyond heartbreaking 💔 for that family. Not to mention 100% preventable!! Whether it was alcohol, drugs, speeding or all them, this chaos needs to stop! Before you start that car, think! Pay attention so everyone can get to their intended destination safely! The person who caused this is innocent life to be taken away should be punished to the fullest extent of the law… nothing less!
