I am beyond proud to announce the incredible success of our Coolidge Math Team this year!!  We have finished First Place in our statewide division (divisions are based on prior years’ performances), beating Newton Country Day School by 30 points, for a total of 766 points for the year.  This is the highest score ever for the Town of Reading! 👏👏  I plan to have a final party to celebrate them all, and present them with their first place plaque, before the end of the year!

Our team officially finished 18th in the entire state, behind some very large math powerhouse towns such as Lexington and Winchester.  And, we were neck and neck with Wellesley all year!  Don’t forget, these top schools are very large, comprised of upwards of 1,000 students.  Also of note, we finished ahead of not only Newton Country Day, but also Shore Country Day, Boston Latin, Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) Charter School and St John’s Prep, and Austin Prep, who did not even field a team this year.

We also had two students earn their own individual plaques!  Thomas Jin, for being the highest scoring 8th grader in our statewide division, and Jeffrey Zhang, for earning the 2nd highest score (top 4 students) in the entire state for 6th grade!  Remarkable achievements!

Thank you to our dedicated 8th graders, who helped me form this team, just last year.  I cannot believe what all you have managed to achieve on this team, with only one year’s prior experience at this level. Our departing 8th graders are: Allison Kane, Isla Nowak, Jayson Encarnacao, Matthew Goldner, Morgan Conant, Peter Misticawi, and Thomas Jin.

In order to achieve this high a level of success, every one of the 10 “regulars” on the team needs to perform at a very competitive level, at every meet, and that’s exactly what they did!  Not to mention, our robust team of alternates scored us an additional 268 points this year (not included in our official 766 total). I cannot wait to see what they can do next year!

I hope they are all SO proud of all they accomplished on this remarkable team.

The final official scores for our local competitors in our “cluster” were:

  • Coolidge 766
  • Lynnfield 684
  • Parker 636
  • Wakefield 606
  • Melrose 594
  • Stoneham 482
  • Wilmington 166
