After Nearly 20 Years, The Green Tomato to Close

A staple in Reading’s community since 2003, The Green Tomato will close this Friday until further notice. Citing rising product costs and availability as the reason for closure.

Warning signs came back in July, due to air conditioning issues and a staff shortage, The Green Tomato was closed for the entire month. When they re-opened on August 2nd, the message below was posted inside warning of a potential closure and price hikes. In addition, their hours were also cut, and Mondays were eliminated from the schedule.

I’ve been going to The Green Tomato ever since I moved to Reading back in 2008. They had the most amazing turkey dinners as if it was Thanksgiving on a daily basis. I’m one of those rare people that liked turkey dinner for school lunch back in High School, always getting double on those rare occasions. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it was the Pot Roast special at The Green Tomato. Unless of course, it was during the Fall, in which they had Ham dinners on Thursday. When my wife was pregnant with our youngest, she would have massive cravings for their spinach pie, which unfortunately for the both of us, was only on Wednesdays.

When I relocated my company’s office in March 2020 from the Trade Center in Woburn to Haven Street in Reading, I could not have been happier with my new neighbor’s just outside my window. Every time I’d have employees come up from Rhode Island to my office, I’d always be sure to introduce them to the best home cooked meals in the area.

I remember winning the 10th anniversary raffle at Cup Cake City last year, from you guessed it, The Green Tomato. Both Cupcake City and The Green Tomato are staples in the Reading community. Always stepping up for fundraisers and and giving back. With so many incredible small businesses in Reading, it’s a shame to be losing one of them.

This website was made with #shoplocal in mind. More importantly, Shop01867, with a tab specifically devoted to it and even the Shop01867.com domain redirecting to it. Eventually, it will feature all the small businesses in Reading. Please, whenever you get a chance, leave a review or a like for a local business on social media. It’s free, fast and easy. It might mean all the difference in the end.

I’m not sure what’s next for The Green Tomato but when I was in there earlier today, they had a wall of takeout orders, and the phone was ringing off the hook. They survived the pandemic, I’d like to think somehow, they’ll survive these uncertain times too. I for one, as well as the entire Reading community behind them, hope so too.
