If you’re a Verizon TV (FiOS) customer, you’ve probably noticed that Fox has been blacked out for the past couple of weeks due to an ongoing contract dispute, with no resolution in sight. I found a free app called LocalTV+ (link below) that works if you’re within about 100 miles of Boston—it provides access to all the local channels, so you can watch today’s Patriots game and others without issue. It took me just 30 seconds to sign in with my Apple ID (iTunes account), and it’s working perfectly! No need to mess with free trials or fees on other apps, this just works for 0.

Verizon is also phasing out support for CableCARDs, which means my TiVo DVR—something I’ve relied on for over a decade—will no longer function come February. For anyone curious, I’m planning to switch to a ZapperBox DVR paired with an HD antenna. It’s designed to handle the newer ATSC 3.0 DRM-protected broadcasts once the FCC finalizes those standards. Since we hardly ever watch live television anymore, cutting my monthly TV bill by more than $100 just makes financial sense at this point.
