The inaugural meeting of the Killam School Building Committee kicked off Monday, July 18th. The KSBC, for short, is tasked with requesting a $2.2 million appropriation from Town Meeting for a feasibility study and a basic design by February 2023 to qualify for reimbursement and to proceed to the next stage of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process. To meet that deadline, the committee must have the request added to the November Town Meeting warrant unless a special town meeting is held in the interim. The current Killam School was first constructed in 1969 with limited renovations but most recently added two modular classrooms due to space constraints.
The committee elected Pat Tompkins (Current Chair of the Permanent Building Committee) as Chair and Carla Nazzaro (Current Vice-Chair of the School Committee) as Vice-Chair. Carla nominated Pat, which was seconded by Karen Gately-Herrick and the motion passed unanimously 9-0. Sarah McLaughlin then nominated Carla for Vice-Chair, which was seconded by John Coote and the motion unanimously passed 9-0. The committee will meet on the 3rd Monday of every month at 6pm. The next meeting, however, will be on August 22nd at 6pm instead.
The remaining 7 other members of the committee are as follows: John Coote, Kirk McCormick, Greg Stepler, and Nancy Twomey from the Permanent Building Committee. Sarah McLaughlin from the School Committee. Karen Gately-Herrick from the Select Board, and wrapping it up is the Town’s Treasurer and local resident, Endri Kume.
The KSBC is expected to run for about 3-5 years and surely subsequent meetings will be longer than the last.
