Town, Schools officially celebrate Special Education Parent Advisory Council
The Town of Reading officially proclaimed the month of November as SEPAC Awareness month.
On Tuesday evening, Select Board members unanimously voted to proclaim the recognition, first made last month by the School Committee, to spread awareness of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council, a parent-led group that works for the understanding of, respect for, and support of, all children with special needs in the community.
School Committee Member Thomas Wise serves as the Committee Liaison for SEPAC and proposed the proclamation to both town bodies.
Massachusetts General Law (Chapter 71B: Section 3) requires every school district to establish a SEPAC. Like all SEPACs, the Reading SEPAC serves as an adviser to the School Committee on matters that pertain to the education and safety of students with disabilities. In addition, SEPAC has a duty to meet regularly with school officials to participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the district’s special education programs.
To celebrate Awareness Month, SEPAC will host a movie night on November 6th. See graphic for details. In addition, many RPS staff members and others will wear teal ribbons or clothing this month.
