Almost everyone is aware of the pickleball craze that has taken the country by storm.  Its popularity has grown at rates never seen by any sport.    What some people seem to be stuck on is that pickleball is just for older folks.  Yes, it’s done revolutionary things for the older generation and is a huge part of many retirees’ way of life – but the recent trend has seen a shift in demographics on the courts.  The 18 to 34 age group has been the largest segment of pickleball growth, now making up nearly 30 percent of players, and the introduction of pickleball into the school systems’ athletic programs is quickly emerging both nationally and here in Massachusetts.

Pickleball can be an important addition to school sports. It is an inclusive and adaptable sport, suitable for students of all ages, genders, and abilities. It provides kids with a fun and engaging way to stay active and healthy, while offering a wide range of physical, mental, and social benefits.   The pickleball activity at RMHS Unity Day was oversubscribed this year illustrating that there is a strong interest among Reading youth.

The very limited number of courts currently in Reading is challenging to the existing pickleball community and has held back the many people interested in trying out the sport.  More courts are desperately needed both for current players as well as those looking to learn the game.

Pickleball benefits all ages, and where it’s heading has not been lost on Reading Recreation administrators and town officials.    They have found a spot for new public courts on the recently purchased town land at Symonds Way, a location with no close residents, eliminating the potential for noise problems.

The funding for construction of seven courts at Symonds Way near the Burbank Ice Arena has unanimous support from the Select Board and Finance Committee and is up for Town Meeting vote at the end of this month.  Through donations and fundraising, the pickleball community has already raised over $200,000 to put toward the project.  These courts will ease the current demand and open the door for new players, including families and student athletes.  Please contact the town meeting members in your precinct and ask that they cast an important yes vote.
