Join RPL’s New Busy Bee Volunteer Program—Kickoff Meeting March 15!

Reading Public Library (RPL), Reading, MA—The Reading Public Library invites nature enthusiasts and gardening newcomers alike to the launch of its exciting new Busy Bee Volunteer Program, kicking off Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 2:00-3:00 pm in the Studio. This free, innovative, year-long initiative brings together people who share interests in plants, sustainability, and making our spaces more beautiful.

The family-friendly program offers a perfect blend of learning, doing, and socializing. Participants will become part of a core group of volunteers who help maintain RPL’s outdoor spaces and connect with fellow garden enthusiasts through hands-on activities and seasonal celebrations.

“We’re creating more than just beautiful spaces; we’re building connections,” says Library Director Amy Lannon. She adds, “Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just curious about plants, the Busy Bee Program will offer a welcoming environment to learn, share, and make new friends.”

The first meeting starts with a fun take-home propagation project featuring herbs that can be nurtured and hopefully added to one of the RPL gardens. Throughout the year, volunteers can look forward to:

  • participation in national environmental initiatives
  • social events (ice cream, anyone?)
  • seasonal workshops with make-and-take activities
  • documenting RPL garden transformations

The program will work toward achieving Certified Wildlife Habitat status (https://certifiedwildlifehabitat.nwf.org/) for the library’s grounds and joining the Homegrown National Park initiative (https://homegrownnationalpark.org/), giving volunteers the satisfaction of contributing to larger environmental goals while enjoying regular social connections with fellow participants.

The Busy Bee Program welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels. Those interested in joining this exciting new volunteer opportunity can RSVP using the Busy Bee volunteer application.

For more information about the Busy Bee Program, please contact RPL by phone or rdgadmin@noblenet.org.
