Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD), announces the hiring of Michael O’Neill as its new Director of Operations. With a career spanning over two decades in the electric utility industry, Michael brings a wealth of experience, having held key roles at National Grid and Eversource.

Michael occupied various leadership roles including Electric Overhead Manager, Electric Underground Manager, and Electric Operations OH Supervisor, National Grid. In these positions, he managed the maintenance and construction of Overhead/Underground distribution systems with a focus on safety and efficiency. As Electric Operations OH Supervisor, Michael directed the maintenance and construction of distribution and transmission systems, ensuring safety, meeting deadlines and budgets, and responding to emergencies.

Prior to his role at National Grid, Michael was the Electric Construction Supervisor for Station/Substation & Electric Operations Construction at Eversource. In this position, he was responsible for the continuous maintenance and construction of the underground transmission systems, overseeing projects such as GIS equipment installations, repairs, and upgrades, as well as new station construction and major pipeline installations.

“Michael’s extensive expertise in managing teams supporting electrical distribution and transmission systems, along with his dedicated commitment to infrastructure development, equips him to be an effective team leader,” said RMLD General Manager Greg Phipps. “Michael’s passion for building out RMLD’s network aligns seamlessly with our goals, particularly in preparing our infrastructure for electrification and for finding opportunities for in-territory generation and network digitization within.”

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology as well as several certifications that underscore his expertise in the utility industry. As Director of Operations, Michael will play a pivotal role in steering RMLD’s operating tactics, focusing on safety, project management, and execution excellence.
