“Accessibility improvements could cost up to $181,000, with savings opportunities under review”

At the recent Select Board meeting, Town Manager Jayne Wellman and Conservation Administrator Chuck Tirone provided an update on potential accessibility and compliance upgrades at Mattera Cabin, outlining projected costs and discussing ways to reduce the financial impact on the Town.

The discussion focused on improvements needed to bring the cabin into compliance with accessibility requirements and other public-building standards. Officials reviewed preliminary cost estimates ranging from approximately $121,000 to $181,000, depending on the final scope of work, contracting approach, and project contingencies. The work would include accessibility ramps, railings, restroom upgrades, and other improvements designed to make the facility more accessible to residents while preserving its character and function.

To help offset construction expenses, Tirone outlined several cost-saving strategies. Among the options discussed were partnerships with volunteers and vocational education programs that could provide labor for portions of the project. Town officials noted that volunteer efforts have historically played an important role in maintaining Mattera Cabin and could again help reduce project costs. Tirone estimated that volunteer participation could save the Town between $25,000 and $30,000.

The Town is also exploring whether regional vocational schools, including Northeast Metro Tech, may be interested in participating in the project as part of student training programs. Officials said such partnerships could further lower overall costs while providing educational opportunities for students. If those efforts are successful, the Town believes the net cost of the project could fall to under $100,000.

Board members discussed the challenges of funding the project amid broader budget considerations and emphasized the importance of identifying creative approaches to make the improvements more affordable.

No vote was taken on the Mattera Cabin project. Town officials plan to continue evaluating funding options, potential partnerships, and updated cost estimates before returning to the Board with additional recommendations. Mattera Cabin has been closed indefinitely amid code compliance concerns since August 2025.
