“Resolution honors DPW staff for vital services supporting infrastructure, safety, and daily operations“
The Select Board unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday declaring May 17 through May 23, 2026 as National Public Works Week in Reading, recognizing the contributions of the town’s Department of Public Works staff.
The resolution was introduced with remarks from Chris Cole, director of the Department of Public Works, who thanked the board for its continued support and emphasized the dedication of his staff.
Cole noted that Public Works Week is recognized nationally and is traditionally marked in Reading through a formal designation by the Select Board. He highlighted the wide range of responsibilities handled by the department and expressed appreciation for employees who support essential town operations year-round.
Board member Christopher Haley then read the resolution aloud, outlining the critical role public works services play in daily life. The proclamation cited areas including engineering, highway maintenance, stormwater management, water and sewer systems, parks, forestry, and cemetery operations as integral to the town’s functioning.

The resolution also emphasized that public works services are often unseen but essential to public health, safety, and overall quality of life, and called on residents to recognize the contributions of public works employees.
Board members offered their appreciation for the department’s work, particularly following the challenges of the winter season, and discussed plans for a future tour of the DPW facilities to further highlight operations and staff efforts.
The Select Board approved the resolution by a unanimous vote of 4–0–0.
