The Killam School Building Committee held their second meeting last night. A presentation on the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process was made by architect, Dale Gienapp, of Gienapp Architects.  Mr. Gienapp mentioned that only one school project can be part of the MSBA at any given time. Since the Killam process will take roughly 3-4 years, they looked into any other potential school buildings that may need replacement on the horizon. Only the Birch Meadow School would likely need changes but would fit just outside the threshold. The Killam School kept floating to the top because of the land and ease of access. They also looked at renovating the Killam School but the gym and classrooms were very undersized and non-advantageous. Below are the two most likely scenarios; scheme A & B.

It’s really for the town to select what’s the most advantageous solution.

The town is well ahead of the process by already forming and appointing a building committee and is planning to request the funds for the next phase which includes the feasibility study and schematic design at the Fall Town Meeting. The anticipated cost for initial funding is roughly $2.2 Million Dollars.

There will be a formal Killam School Building Hearing on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the School Committee Meeting in the Patrick A. Schettini, Jr. Library Media Center in the Reading Memorial High School.  All town residents and Town Meeting Members are invite to attend and learn about this project and what it means for our community.  The meeting schedule for the remainder of the year will be at 6pm on the following dates: September 19th, October 17th, (no November meeting because of Town Meeting) and December 12th.

The committee concluded by approving their July 18th meeting minutes 8-0 and adjourned at 7:20PM.
