SUMMARY:Abolition's Foot Soldiers: Female Anti-Slavery Societies in Antebellum Massachusetts (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:For at least the past three decades\, scholars have argued that slavery’s abolition would not have happened without interracial collaboration between politically-minded women. From 1830-1865\, an interracial and transnational group of women insisted that the struggles for women’s liberation and abolition were linked. They rooted their activism in their shared passion for religion\, writing\, reading\, and teaching. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Jaimie Crumley will show that the efforts of the anti-slavery women in Massachusetts demonstrate the distinctively feminist contours of antebellum abolitionism. But then only 2 people showed up for the book signing. What followed next was a Twitter storm of support from some of the biggest names in publishing when Chelsea posted about the experience. In conversation with debut authors Laura Gao\, Brian D. Kennedy\, Jean Louise\, and XiXi Tian\, Chelsea will chat about the challenges and joys of getting your first book out in the world. DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar! The Reading Community Singers are pleased to announce that our Spring Season will begin with our First Rehearsal on Tuesday\, January 31. RCS is one of the longest running non-audition groups in the United States. Registration is now open on the RCS website: https://readingcommunitysingers.org/concerts/membership-dues/ \nOr\, you can try RCS out in person\, first ~ Sign-In on January 31 will start at 6:45 PM\, with Rehearsal to follow at 7:30. In-person Registration is open for the first three rehearsals. \nRehearsals are every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 PM at Old South United Methodist Church\, 6 Salem St.\, Reading MA. \nAll Newcomers are always Welcome! While RCS does NOT require Auditions\, our Members must love to sing\, be able to match pitch and carry a tune\, and be committed to attending rehearsals. We’re open to all ages – from High School age to Senior Citizens. \nOur Spring Concert\, “A Jubilant Song”\, will be presented on Saturday\, May 13 at 7:30 PM at Reading Memorial High School.
