SUMMARY:Abolition's Foot Soldiers: Female Anti-Slavery Societies in Antebellum Massachusetts (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:For at least the past three decades\, scholars have argued that slavery’s abolition would not have happened without interracial collaboration between politically-minded women. From 1830-1865\, an interracial and transnational group of women insisted that the struggles for women’s liberation and abolition were linked. They rooted their activism in their shared passion for religion\, writing\, reading\, and teaching. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Jaimie Crumley will show that the efforts of the anti-slavery women in Massachusetts demonstrate the distinctively feminist contours of antebellum abolitionism. Further\, she will assert that learning from the successes and failures of antebellum female anti-slavery societies can inform contemporary feminist organizing. \nTo register for this virtual program\, please use the library link provided below.

SUMMARY:Cycle of Memory-Documentary Screening @RPL
DESCRIPTION:Join the Reading Public Library and the Pleasant Street Center for a special screening of Cycle of Memory\, the new award-winning documentary about two brothers’ bicycle adventure to find the memories their grandfather lost to Alzheimer’s. Mel Schwartz escaped the Great Depression on a bicycle adventure he’d remember for the rest of his life. But when Alzheimer’s takes Mel’s memories away\, it’s left to his grandsons to recreate the life-changing bike trip and find those memories again. Guided by old photographs of the 1945 trip\, they search for places aged by time. But while searching for Grandpa Mel’s past\, the two are confronted with their own fraught history. If they’re going to complete the turbulent journey\, they’ll have to face their own emotional potholes and tumultuous relationship. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Reading Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency: massculturalcouncil.org. Please register! \nAbout the film:\nThe film is 72 minutes long and will be followed by a Q+A with the filmmaker.
